   General Information

Istanbul Medical School, Trauma & Emergency Surgery Unit was first established in 1982 as the first unit on this field in the country by Saman Belgerden MD who was a Professor of Surgery under the surveillance of Professor Cemalettin Oner MD, who was the dean of faculty during that period. Following this, when Sedat Katircioglu was the dean of faculty, the unit was established in the old surgery building, under the directory of the General Surgery Department.

  

Thus, trauma & emergency care, that was carried on by General Surgery services until then was gathered up in this unit. With this new organization, problems in patient admission, treatment and follow-up were better taken care of.

Prof. Saman Belgerden

At the end of 1986, General Surgery Department moved into the new Monobloc Surgery Building, and thus Trauma & Emergency Surgery Unit remained in the old surgery building. The unit is functioning as the Emergency Unit of the General Surgery Department and is run by General Surgeons.

Professor Saman Belgerden, who was the director of the unit since 1982, retired in 1994. Omer Turel MD, who is also a professor of Surgery was appointed as the director between 1994 and 1998. Mehmet Kurtoglu MD, who is a professor of Surgery is the director since the beginning of 1998. The faculty consists of 4 professors of surgery, 1 associate professor of surgery.
